Crochet Granny Square Tutorial for Beginners

Why are granny squares so popular?

The granny square is a crochet staple that made its debut all the way back in 1891. Granny squares earned their first published print pattern in 1897, and we’ve been making/seeing these brightly coloured squares ever since.

Ever wondered why “grannies” hold such enduring appeal?

-They’re fun to create

-They’re easy on the wallet

-They’re portable

-They provide endless opportunity for colour pairing and palette testing

-They were initially designed for the use of scraps. That’s right: yarn de-stashing opportunities, and this is precisely why the tradition of crocheted granny squares is quite a colourful one.

For this tutorial you will need:

  1. a 4.5mm crochet hook
  2. a tapestry needle
  3. scissors
  4. 5 different colours of our Vegan Mylk Cotton blend yarn

Follow along with our Accessible Step-by-Step Video Tutorial
